Adebisi Shank perform a new song live from Entourage Studios in Los Angeles. It was recorded to multitrack and mixed by Toshi Kasai (Melvins, Indian Handcrafts) while the band was over for their summer tour in the US with Fang Island. This is part 1 of a 3 part session.

If you need a song to get you revved up and ready to go, look no further; Adebisi Shank has you covered. This Irish trio puts out some seriously upbeat math-rocky craziness, and Genki Shank (free dl) from their album This Is The Second Album Of A Band Called Adebisi Shank is a great introduction.

A bit more intuitive than some of their other, mathier tunes, Genki Shank has a great galloping beat and a perfect example of less-is-more bass playing. It’s like the aural equivalent of a stiff cup of coffee. I know I’ll listen to it right after I reluctantly drag myself out of bed tomorrow morning, you might want to give that a try too.

BBC Music Live Show Review: Belfast

Given that tonight’s gig in the Bunatee Bar is first and foremost an opportunity for Dublin rockers Adebisi Shank to test out new material as part of their “New Tunez” tour, it would be natural to assume that they might be a tad rusty on the live circuit these days - particularly as their most recent round of serious touring came towards the end of last year. This crowd aren’t buying into that notion for a second though, as a quick look around the Bunatee reveals a loyal fan base that are expecting to be entertained. And entertained they are, first of all by Cork native Toby Kaar. Setting up behind a laptop and a few samplers, the audience might be expecting a relatively tame head-bobbing DJ set- but what makes Kaar’s performance stand out tonight is that it’s just that - a performance.

With various bits of his musical setup glowing and pulsing steadily, Kaar moves head, feet, and just about everything else to trick the audience into thinking that they’re not just watching a DJ set.

Fortunately there is nothing modest about the crowd that have amassed by the time Adebisi Shank are ready to perform. The Bunatee has made the quick transformation from an intimate venue to a packed-out sweatbox - all too appropriate given the frantic nature of their set.

Tonight may be all about giving new tracks an outing, but such is the crowd’s enthusiasm that whether the band play old classics such as ‘You Me’ or numbers that the crowd aren’t quite familiar with yet, the reaction is the same; beaming smiles and moving feet. Indeed, ‘Fun’ is the keyword tonight, as the trio power through a set that barely stops to take pause- and does so only when the band’s laptop gets temperamental.

Even at that, guitarist Lar and bassist Vinny’s experimental noodling whilst normal service is resumed is a joy to watch. It’s probably the only time tonight that the audience actually stops to try and comprehend how the band make the sounds that they do, such is the speed and skill with which they play. It’s a much bigger sound than a line-up of three would suggest. ‘International Dreambeat’ is spectacular tonight - the band’s second album generally comes across very well. Their new material also seems to suggest a leaning towards Sargent House label-mates Fang Island, which can be no bad thing.

All in all it’s an impressive feat that they have taken a genre which can become a bit samey at times, and through their live performance inject a well received dose of variety and excitement into proceedings. Whether that can continue remains to be seen - but they’ve certainly done it tonight. - Andrew Lemon

It is a Dublin Community Television production and was made by the Community Of Independents collective that works with the channel. Featuring live footage and audio of various Irish artists including Adebisi Shank, ASIWYFA as well as insightful interviews with some of the people that have been involved in the growth of this scene including Mick about The Richter Collective andCathy Pellow from Sargent House and so many more . Hypnotic, electrifying performance from a very talented trio!

Adebisi Shank, what a name…what a band! I had the good fortune to be in the right place at the right time at this year’s Electric Picnic to catch these lads in action and action it is! The sound that this band of three achieves is incredible. The whole audience was taken on a rocking journey that went from hypnotic to downright all-out head-banging, The musical arrangements are both intelligent and challenging for the listener and there is no doubting the musicianship and hard work that has gone into this band’s music. Adebisi Shank’s live performance is something that everyone should experience at least once!

Two of Ireland’s most respected live bands Adebisi Shank and The Cast of Cheers are set to headline “Tales from The Crypt” Monster Halloween Fancy Dress Ball in assocaition with “Live at The Clubhouse Presents” with All Affairs Fancy Dress and T-Rex clothing next Friday night 28th October at Castlebar Celtic.

Its being almost 2 years since Adebisi Shank last played Castlebar. Cast Of Cheers unleashed a ballsy post-punk racket that’s every bit as impressive as their moniker. Describing themselves as sounding “like the end of the world and dancing”, the band have decided to offer there superb debut album ‘Chariot’ for free. A raucous assault of angular riffs and insistent vocals, it’s what Death From Above 1979 might sound like if they were trapped in a lift with Battles and Foals. Get there early and jump around to these guys.? Completely overwhelmed by the response by the bands recently released album “Chariot” The band frontman stated that it’s been amazing. We couldn’t have asked for a better reception. It’s made us really excited for the live shows.?The cast of Cheers set out by offering there debut album online for free download. A sharp lookin’ fella in a red fabric mask mans the bass guitar with chaotic precision whilst bouncing in unison alongside the twiddles and strikes of a juddering guitarist. The pounding, commanding, dictating, thumping, clouting drums from behind meet the electric noise in the middle. Strong riffs and hooks bellow and sound from speaker to speaker smashing hot instrumental alternative rock all over the room. (10/5/2011 @ The Brudenell Social club)

I have never in my 21 years on this planet ever ventured, in any shape or form to the part of the world called Ireland, neither north nor south. I always feel that I should go, but the opportunity has never arisen. St. Patrick’s day in Dublin (as I have been told) is shit-hot, so I don’t know why I don’t just get a cheap flight over. I think I know what I’m going to do this summer.

But, I have been indulging in a healthy dose of Irish rock music as of late. One band in particular have twisted, controlled and captivated my musical mind into a well-fashioned attractive mush. Adebisi Shank have uncompromisingly been creating a truly one-of-kind sound since the release of their 1^st EP ‘This is the EP of a band called Adebisi Shank’ in 2007. The brute-force and rawness on such tracks as ‘Horse’ & ‘Jump Cut’ showed the true talent that the Irish instrumental trio possessed in their song writing and showmanship.

Adebisi Shank are a loud, eccentric, energetic, electric and elegantly experimental band who predominantly make their music with guitar, bass and drums. Yet their noise is a thick and well-crafted powerhouse of magical licks, bleeps, tinks, booms and glitches made with a sea of pedals and knobs; an orchestra of power fuzz.

With the introduction of their 1^st and (most recently) 2^nd album, the band from Wexford, Ireland have honed their style, proving that their music is terrific and terrifyingly addictive. Their albums, although both brilliant, each shed a contrasting light on the band, ‘This is the Album of a band called Adebisi Shank’ is a truly powerful LP which is fast paced, distorted and compellingly familiar throughout. Whilst the aptly (you guessed it) named ‘This is the Second Album of a band called Adebisi Shank’ shows right from the word ‘go,’ (well in this case the word ‘International Dreambeat’) that the album is very different from the last. The 2^nd LP is more studio based opposed to the live feel of the 1^st, more effects, processors and electronic based sounds are at work here, creating both a more varied and broad sound.

Adebisi Shank are becoming more and more well known with every gig, record, review and music video. Their increasing popularity has landed them some brilliant opportunities over the past few years, whether it’s touring Japan, playing SXSW over in the States, signing to Sargent House or even being nominated for a Choice Music Prize, they have done some epic stuff.

So make sure you don’t let these titans, these mammoths of instrumental alternative rock pass you by, you’ll regret it.

Review: Adebisi Shank, Cosby Stage

Atmosphere: A hugely appreciative crowd gather in the smallish Cosby tent in anticipation of entering the wind machine simulator that is Adebisi Shank live.

High: Vinny giving his bass guitar away to someone in the front row at the end of the gig much to everyone’s astonishment.

Low: The feeling that this gig would have been better placed late in the day.

Quote of the set: “My nipple ring is so sore.” - Bassist Vinny. Well at least we think that’s what he said, it was pretty muffled as he spoke into a mic while wearing a hooded mask.

Verdict: Adebisi are relentless, and like all of their gigs, you spend as much time trying to figure out how they’re managing to play the sounds they’re emitting as enjoying the actual show.

It’s not the greatest or most atmospheric Adebisi Shank performance of all time (according to fans, that goes to their Castlepalooza set this year) but if being confronted by this illuminating, complex and exhilarating music of an afternoon doesn’t blast away your tent fatigue then you must be cryogenically frozen. - by UNA MULLALLY

…Adebisi Shank were next up and they played their usual kind of gig. So, roughly ten times better than any other gig you’ve ever been to. Seriously though, these three guys have moved to a level beyond compare in this country. Fun, frantic, sweaty, their set had everything you’d expect, culminating in masked bassist Vinny leaping from a wooden platform high up one of the tent’s poles into the welcoming arms of his adoring crowd while joyous noise emanated from the stage. - CLICK FOR ENTIRE REVIEW
